How do you replace the RAM memory in a laptop?

Replacing the RAM memory in your laptop is normally a simple job. Follow the steps in this manual and you'll be done in no time. Good luck!

What do you need?

A laptop

1 or more RAM modules

Tool to open the case of your laptop

An anti-static bracelet

A towel

Tip: leave the new RAM module in the packaging for as long as possible. This minimizes the risk of damage from static charge or dust.

Step 1 - Unload

If you are going to tinker with a computer, it is important not to be statically charged. You have probably felt that static charge as a shock that you occasionally get when you shake someone's hand. That charge, no matter how small, can be disastrous for computer components. Therefore, work with an anti-static bracelet.

Step 2 - Power off

Turn off the laptop. Not in sleep mode, but really off. Do not charge the laptop when you open it. Do you have a removable battery? Then take it off. Press the on/off button and hold it for a few seconds. This drains the last bit of power from the laptop

Step 3 - Open Case

To replace the RAM memory, you have to open the laptop's case. This goes through the bottom of the laptop. Sometimes the bottom consists of several panels and you only have to loosen 1 panel. Sometimes it is necessary to unscrew the entire back cover.

Option A: The bottom of my laptop has several panels

Place the closed laptop on a soft surface, such as a towel.

Look for the RAM memory logo on the panels. That logo is a rectangular block with stripes at the bottom. If there are no logos on the panels, you will have to unscrew them one by one to see where the RAM modules are located.

Option B: the bottom of my laptop consists of 1 whole

Place the closed laptop on a soft surface, such as a towel.

Loosen the screws and remove the lower part of the housing.

Tip: place the screws on the towel so that they do not roll away and get lost.

Step 4 - Remove old RAM module

The way in which the RAM memory is attached to the motherboard can sometimes differ. In most cases there are 2 clips above the RAM module.

Slide the clips above the RAM module to the side until the RAM module pops up a bit.

Pull out the RAM module. Only hold the sides when doing this, so that you do not damage or dirty the chip and other metal particles.

Step 5 - Insert new RAM module

A RAM module only fits in one way in the mounting on the motherboard. The RAM module has a notch at the bottom. That notch fits into a bulge on the motherboard mount.

Grab the new RAM module by the sides.

Locate the bulge in the motherboard mount and make sure that the notch on the RAM module fits into it.

Push the RAM module firmly into the mount.

Push the RAM module down until the 2 clips click over it again.

Step 6 - Close the laptop again

The laptop can be closed again. Screw the loosened parts back on. Have you disconnected the battery? Then click it again.

There is no need to install additional software or anything like that. Your laptop automatically recognizes the new RAM memory.

Issues?

Did something go wrong? See below for some possible solutions to problems.

Do you have a replaceable battery? Check whether it is properly clicked into place.

Put the old RAM memory back and check whether the laptop works now. If so, then it is not the laptop, but the RAM module (read more at the next point). If not, there may be something wrong with the laptop. Did you accidentally pull out a cable during installation?

Not every RAM module works with every laptop. Are you sure you bought the right RAM module? Read more about what to look out for here.

Does the system say that you have just a little less RAM than you thought you had installed? Do not panic. Due to different methods of measurement, this may differ slightly.
